OU, AU, or OC? Original universe, alternate universe, or original character?
If canon, canon point: Just as the second Sister's blade slips in to his back. Not enough to warrant collapse, but there'll be a sliver of a cut at his back that should probably get a band-aid or something.
PB: N/A. While Beetle's VA is Matthew McConaughey, his inhuman appearance (and Matthew being the wrong look for where the movie is based- sorry, Matt!) will have me relying mostly on screencaps and fanart. If Beetle ever does get turned (temporarily!) human, however, I'll have to find someone but until then KANYE SHRUG
Superhero Name: Okay wait for it....THE MIGHTY BEETLE. Bet you didn't see that coming, huh??? (If that isn't acceptable, he'll briefly suggest 'The Bugmurai' before it probably gets shot down by Kubo and Sariatu, after which he'll have to do some thinking and...we'll figure something out.)
History: have a link! TL;DR-
--Noble Samurai is Best Samurai of all of the land
--Goes to Fite Moon King!!!111one, ends up falling in love with one of his daughters midfite
--Whisks daughter away (consensual kidnapping, thank u) to fortress, has baby
--Moon King finds out about baby, goes EXCUSE ME, sends other two daughters on assault to take baby('s eyes) and also Heck Shit Up
--Samurai stays behind with his army to give waifu & bb time to escape
--Samurai & co loses, Samurai is promptly cursed to not only lose his memory but to be forcibly merged with his armor, twisted in to an inhuman beetle form
--Beetle wakes up lost in the ruins of his own fortress, not knowing his own name (much less his family)
--Beetle finds just enough scraps of memory to decide that he was clearly a warrior here, under that Noble Samurai, drags some things with him as he leaves to try and find his way
--Somehow ends up in the Far Lands and decides to hang out for a bit?
--EVENTUALLY Monkey andBoy Kubo come by, turns out Boy is son of that Samurai holy crap!!!!! MUST JOIN ON QUEST
--WHAT AN EPIC QUEST TO FIND LEGENDARY ARTIFACTS TO FITE MOON KING OH BOY THIS IS THE BEST QUEST EVER BEETLE IS HAVING AN AMAZING TIME
--Beetle finds out Monkey is actually the mom of Kubo and wife of that Samurai??
--Beetle finds out he's the dad holy shit mind = blown
--Beetle gets literally stabbed in the back by one of those moon daughters and oop him dead now, l8r h8r
(We're removing the last point for the purpose of his canon point. Rather, it's just as that one is starting.)
Additional OC and AU Background: N/A
Personality:
Monkey: If you have no memory, how can you be certain of anything?
Beetle: Because I get flashes. They come about from objects I find on my travels. Sometimes it’s a sound. Or a smell.
Monkey: You must get a lot of flashes.
Beetle: The memories, they fade, and all I’m left with is the sense that I was once part of something much greater.
Beetle, for all of his outward confidence and exuberance, freely admits the fact that he has a couple problems. Not necessarily bad ones, just. His memory's spotty, which is to say it's comprised mostly of spots in a mass of void. Simply put, he doesn't have much to build on...but he hasn't let that get him down. What he does know is this; he was a noble warrior, or at least fought for one, and who's to say he can't keep on being that, huh?
He's bright, cheerful, inquisitive, and...cocky. He doesn't know what he can't do, and he's prone to finding out by, well, attempting. Often this can get him in to trouble, but so far he's always come out on top, so there's no real reason to believe he won't continue to come out on top - so long as he has someone at his back, that is. Despite having been isolated for most of his memory (headcanon; he learned very early on that trying to interact with Normal People would generally get him heralded as a monster, and he darn well knew he wasn't one, thank you), he's quick to befriend those he can, and is more prone to greet someone with four open arms as opposed to be any sort of defensive.
Not to say he can't be defensive, or even angry (another headcanon; he had a brief stint of being depressive after one of the aforementioned interactions with Normal People) - however, given removal from the situation causing the emotion, he bounces back fairly quickly. He doesn't seem prone to jealousy, more likely to cheer on another's success even at the expense of his own (this may be because, given the circumstances, he was eager to, well, further befriend his new friends? but he was absolutely honest in his glee!). Anything that would generally bring him down is, well. Moved on from, quickly, most often as he's distracted.
And that's where the worst of his memory currently lies; he doesn't forget things as he learns them, it's just that he has a hard time firmly settling them in all that emptiness, and he'll tend to lose track of it if something else seizes his attention. An example being when he went underwater to find a legendary set of armor...and instead, hours later, came back with the fish that he shot earlier with an arrow, awesome check this out look what he got HAH! (Mind, when he was informed that Kubo was now underwater looking for said armor, he quickly abandoned said fish and had no problems rescuing him.)
Once in a while, too, he'll get flashes of memory; they don't occur on any sort of reliable basis, and there's no necessary trigger for them. Even focusing hard doesn't necessarily bring them up- and these memory flashes of whom he once was never last long. A scent may bring back a sense of deja vu, a thought of settling down at a table with a number of others. A song may remind him of standing in the shadows while a figure reaches down in to a box- but the context of these, he has to piece together himself.
All of that is absolutely frustrating and troubling to him, but with the recent revelations during his journey - such as him being the very samurai he thought was his master, and the boy he was following none other than his son, their primate companion the boy's mother and his own wife - well, he didn't have much time to put all of it in to context, but based on his reactions in the movie ("I didn't know."), they appeared to have locked a lot of things in to place. It won't be something he gives up easily - while he's fought to keep every memory he's regained, this piece of knowledge is clearly important to him, and his empathy and love shines through in the few minutes that follow.
(We only say minutes because he was promptly murdered before he could do more than promise to take care of his son.)
And there is an empathy, there is a love in him - not just for his friends, but for his family. It's seen in the paintings of the man he once was, and his spirit form later seen- how much he adores and how proud he is of his son, how much care he has for his wife and fellow spirit. And it's in every part of him, even if he doesn't recognize it for what it is. Hanzo is absolutely still there, and his might, his courage, his strength drew from his love for his fellow man, his willingness to confront danger in their stead, and his ability to see through another's hate and realize that he wasn't set out on a quest to defeat a monster and its spawn at all-
-his true quest was to recognize the love that could be found in others, and to draw it out the only way he could. Sparing Sariatu as opposed to fighting her to the death, beginning a new life with her...how could he not be proud of his son sparing the Moon King (albeit by destroying his memory) and redeeming him as his grandfather?
That's his boy.
Canon Powers: If they have superpowers in canon please list them here just so we have them somewhere.
Game powers:
#1- CURSED FORM
Cursed to merge with his own armor and otherwise twist out of his true form, Beetle...well. Looks a lot like his name. He's a man-Beetle! Beetle-man! Which means he has a ton of armor plating and horns and four arms and alSO HE CAN FLY (he didn't always know that). He's also pretty darn strong, too- not quite with a Rhinoceros Beetle lifting about 850x their own weight, but hey, common stags can lift about 200x. Let's just say he's good with half a ton or so. Finally, he seems to be able to hold his breath for a fair amount of time- an hour or so, at least, with how he began to worry his friends when he was underwater so long.
#2- SLIPPERY MIND
Tied to the first, but arguably 'enhanced' by the setting; part of Beetle's curse was to lose his memory. While he isn't forever forgetful and can absolutely stack new experiences on top of one another to provide a new memory foundation, certain things...don't stick very well. Anything that affects his mind - eg, mind-control, psychic pulses, etc - will have a much less powerful effect on him than other people, and/or constantly need to reassert itself in order to keep any sort of control. He'll recover faster, as well, not necessarily from trauma itself but from the mind-affecting actions that would otherwise cause that sort of thing.
Unfortunately, this does affect to benign effects as well- telepathy (including mind-reading) will have some trouble reaching him. Think of trying to hit an erratically moving target, and you've got an idea of just how much.
#3- LIMITED INVULNERABILITY
Key word 'limited'. Beetle's armor itself will, essentially, becomeUunbreakable; it will be able to take punches, bullets, lasers, blunt trauma (though excessive force can and will crack it, he can't exactly survive having a mountain dropped on him), swords will bounce off, just about everything and only ache/feel like a bruise with a firm exception;
The slits between the armor plating. Though small, but they're there, and if someone can slip a blade or the like in to the cracks, they'll find a standard squishy bugman inside. With that in mind, it's not a vaccuum seal- Beetle would still be at the mercy of, say, space, were he out there without another source of protection. Water (and/or acid), too, could find its way in given time- just might be a bit slower.
Abilities: Beetle has shown himself to be an incredible archer, formidable swordsman, and altogether capable combatant able to protect his allies as well as keep them cheerily motivated. He's not a bad teacher, either, but other than that most of his abilities aren't canonly displayed.
While it could be assumed that somewhere in his lost memories is an accomplished leader of men, gifted tactician, and otherwise the sort of commander who could hold together an entire fortress of warriors...that's, ah. In lost memory, and won't necessarily come up unless there's some reason to stir said memory.
Setting: Short term - castmates aside - Beetle will be easily excited about the whole situation and BEING. A. HERO. The fact he *has* castmates here will help him get over his initial "WHAT NO I HAVE TO GO BACK!!!" which might otherwise hold him back (for however long/short that is) and allow him to fully devote himself in to protecting his new fellows and friends.
Long-term, I'm excited to see how he fares in a game, period, and with the opportunity to grow and develop and really *assert* himself and his rediscovered identity.
...when he remembers it.
SAMPLES
Prose Sample: TDM!
Network Sample: 200 word minimum. You may use the following prompt, or make up your own. Links to RP samples at other games are not accepted, you must write up a new prompt, but you may use samples at other games to supplement your samples. Since the test drives rarely use network format, you cannot use a test drive thread for the network sample, only the prose sample. If your character is a quiet character, introspection or inner monologue is fine.
Welcome to the Legion, rookie. As a way of helping your character cope with their circumstances and have an optimistic outlook towards the future, the existing Legionnaires want them to record a message to their future self with their thoughts on their current situation, what they hope to accomplish in their time with the Legion, and the first thing they want to do when they get sent safely home or to the dimension of their choice.
You're telling me that I can talk to myself in the future?
[Beetle's looking at someone off-camera, a set of hands gesturing to them while the other holds the camera. He looks back at it at they respond, turning it over- and then back right side up with an 'oops' as that other someone corrects them]
Whup, right- I got this. Okay. [Breathe in, and...] Hey there, handsome! [Yes, he just finger-gunned himself in the future except what is a gun, look he picked up the gesture from someone else and it stuck] So here you are, all...in the future. I bet it's awesome. I mean, you've gotten yourself settled in and made a ton of friends, right? How many adventures have you had?! Tell me all about it!
[He promptly stares excitedly at the camera for about ten seconds before there's a polite cough, and that other someone gently reminds him that his future self can't quite...talk back. Beetle seems briefly disappointed, but sort of 'ah well's and continues]
I mean, I'd tell you about mine but...you already had them. I think. Maybe you forgot. We?
[He shakes his head, expression turning wry]
Well, here's hoping that your memory's a little better. [He leans forwards, a hand moving to his chin] We've got a lot of space to fill, right? So, since I can't, ah, think of much else to say...how about I go ahead and get started?
[A reach for the camera- and the recording ends]
Additional info: Beetle will be alternating between good days and bad days, so to speak; his memory doesn't appear to be a solidly consistent or reliable thing. While he won't necessarily forget things, it'll just become difficult for him to connect A to B unless reminded on those bad days.
I'm going to be putting an opt-out post for him because I imagine it could be upsetting to some people as it could possibly resemble RL. Maybe overcautious, but JIC; it'll be a dual 'do you not want me to tag you' and 'do you not want Beetle to forget the CR at all'. Again, it's not really forgetting as someone with a piss-poor memory struggling to. Deal with it. (He may or may not start an IC journal for notes in an effort to work with it, himself.)
